The U14 Elites continued their winning ways in the BHL American with two wins over the Walpole Express and the Springfield Rifles.  Game 1 was the home opener for the 2018-2019 season.  They skated hard and had many opportunities to score early however, the Walpole goalie came up big with some clutch saves leaving the first period scoreless.  The Americans took control of the game in the second period after a two-on-one shorthanded goal was finished by a top shelf wrist shot by Will Burns from Koby Sloan.  The Americans weren’t finished as Brian Swaczyk would finish off a two-on-one and bury his first goal of the game from Bobby Defeo and Bobby Joyce to give the Americans the 2-0 lead going in to the third period.  Swaczyk began the third period where he left off when he capitalized on an Express turnover and buried his second of the game unassisted.  Walpole would take advantage of a miscue by the Americans and cut the lead to 3-2.

That Americans fought back and Bobby Defeo took a nice feed from Nick Palermo to put the Americans in front 4-1.  The Express capitalized on a power-play to cut the lead to 4-2 late in the third period.  However, the momentum was short-lived when Janssen Sperling fed Swaczyk in the neutral zone and he solidified the hat trick with an empty net goal to secure the 5-2 win.  The Americans traveled to Springfield for a tilt against the Rifles on Sunday.  The Americans came out flying and had many chances, unfortunately the Springfield goalie was up to the task and kept the Americans from scoring in what was turning out to be a very physical game.  The first period ended scoreless.  The second period started out the same until the Rifles took advantage of a defensive miscue and scored on a two-on-one on the Americans to take a 1-0 lead.

The Americans fought back and a great face off win by Will Curtin led to a tying goal by Koby Sloan. The rest of the period saw back and forth action with both teams having scoring chances.  The game looked to be heading to a tie, when Jake Murphy took the puck from a Rifle’s defender made a nifty move and put it by the Rifles goalie to take a late 2-1 lead.

The Rifles pulled their goalie and had several chances which were turned away by the Americans goalie to secure the win.  “The boys played well all weekend, and really got our legs going from the second period of the first game through all three periods of the second game.”  Stars of the weekend included Koby Sloan who skated hard and caused many turnovers and scoring opportunities for the Americans, Brian Swaczyk who netted his first career American hat trick and JJ Quill who was a stalwart in net with no goals against the whole weekend.” said Head Coach Leo Barrett.

“The boys played well and everyone contributed and they are all committed to working hard this week to get ready for the home match up with the Warriors on Saturday and the Lovell Knights on Sunday.” said Barrett.
